Vacuum Pouches for Meat Processing: What Commercial Buyers Need

Vacuum Pouches for Meat Processing: What Commercial Buyers Need

A processor buys pouches differently from a butcher. It's pallets not boxes, the technical manager has a supplier approval form, the line runs the same size ten thousand times a week and one bad batch of film stops it. This guide is about what matters at that scale and how we handle it.

The sizes processors run

Primal and bulk packing lives at the big end of the range. Boxes are 500 or 400 rather than 1,000 because the pouches are heavier.

Pouch Box Per bag Typical use
320×520mm 500 7.5p Striploin, ribeye, boneless shoulder
360×520mm 500 8.4p Boned lamb, large gammons
400×500mm 500 9.0p Boneless legs, large primals
400×600mm 500 10.8p Half-pig primals, catering bulk
430×650mm 500 12.6p Beef primals, 10kg blocks
530×650mm 400 15.5p Largest stock format, whole primals

All 65 micron. On a double-chamber machine with a 500mm or longer seal bar, these run at full vacuum without issue. For bone-in primals, the bone-in guide covers guards and the 130 micron option.

Consistency between batches

The thing a line manager actually cares about is that box 400 seals the same as box 1. Film that varies in thickness or seal temperature between deliveries means resetting the machine and chasing leakers. Because our pouches come from one site with one film specification, with batch traceability through the BRC system, the seal window doesn't move between deliveries. If it ever does, the batch number on the box gets it traced in an afternoon.

Colour coding and line separation

Processors running more than one species or a raw and cooked split use blue pouches for one line. They're stocked in 300×400, 400×500 and 400×600mm, same film with a translucent blue tint. The blue pouch guide covers how sites write it into the system. Other tints and printed pouches are made to order.

The paperwork

A technical manager's supplier approval file usually wants four documents, and we send all four on request:

  1. BRC Global Standard for Packaging Materials certificate, grade AA, for the manufacturing site
  2. Declaration of compliance for the film under UK and EU food contact regulations
  3. Technical data sheet for each pouch: structure, gauge, dimensions, seal parameters
  4. Specification of the outer case and pallet configuration

The BRC guide explains what the audit covers if your own auditor asks.

How pallet and scheduled orders work

The online shop takes orders up to £2,000 with free next-day delivery over £120. Above that, or for a standing order, we quote directly: email orders@flexipol.co.uk with sizes and monthly volume. Trade accounts run on Net 30 terms and deliveries can be scheduled weekly or monthly against a call-off. Bespoke sizes, gauges between the stocked 65 and 130, and printed pouches are quoted the same way and made at the Haslingden site.

Beyond pouches

Pre-made pouches suit chamber machines. Processors running thermoformers, flow-wrap or bag-in-box are served by the main Flexipol business, which makes thermoforming films, liners and sacks for food manufacturing. If your line has outgrown pouches, the same people can talk you through the alternatives. The buying direct guide explains the set-up.

Running a trial? Tell us the machine, the product and the sizes and we'll send a sample pack for the line before you commit to a pallet.
